Hong Kong is among the cities with the safest drinking water globally. The Water Supplies Department ("WSD") thoroughly treats and disinfects the water, employing preventive risk management and a multi-barrier approach to ensure drinking water safety. Each year, about 600,000 tests are conducted by WSD from source to tap. Along with monitoring around 100 parameters in the Hong Kong Drinking Water Standards ("HKDWS"), aesthetic guidelines, and the surveillance list, the WSD also tracks over 700 parameters in the Watch List, which includes numerous emerging contaminants.
Emerging contaminants are substances that are newly identified or previously unrecognized, not regulated by regulations, or whose potential health risks are not fully understood. The following are emerging contaminants tracked in the Watch List.
