Hong Kong strict controls on microplastics from source

Regarding Hong Kong's main source of drinking water, the Dongjiang River, the Guangdong provincial authorities have implemented multiple pollution prevention measures. These include relocating the water intake, using biological nitrification stations, constructing dedicated water supply pipelines, completing the Shima River pollution control project, and the comprehensive environmental management project for the Shawan River. These measures have effectively improved the water quality of Dongjiang water supplied to Hong Kong. Additionally, the Dongjiang River basin is subject to strict raw water quality management from the mainland, ensuring the safety of drinking water for citizens. On the other hand, the local catchment area is protected under the Waterworks Ordinance and the Country Parks Ordinance, receiving proper safeguards against pollution.

Most of the gathering grounds are designated as part of the territory’s Country Parks to conserve the precious natural environment of Hong Kong. The public should refrain from contaminating them (see Figure 2). Hikers in particular should protect these precious water resources while enjoying the beautiful scenery there. To promote the "Take your litter home" message and keep the country parks clean.
