With the theme of "Creative Water Saving Ideas to Share with Every Home", the Water Conservation Competition was kicked off on 18 September 2011, the World Water Monitoring Day. Mrs. Carrie LAM, Secretary for Development, and Professor HO Kin Chung, the Chairman of ACQWS, officiated the launching ceremony at the Ma On Shan Water Treatment Works. Mrs. LAM said that the Government had made considerable effort in creating a partnership with the public to achieve water conservation under the Total Water Management Strategy. She mentioned that the Government has also taken reference of the latest developments in management of water resources in other places of the world and adjusted our individual measure with a view to enabling Hong Kong to become a good partner of neighbouring regions in protection of precious water resources.
Also celebrating the event were 100 secondary school students who performed a series of simple scientific tests on the water quality of Ma On Shan Water Treatment Works to mark World Water Monitoring Day 2011, which is an annual event organised by the Hong Kong (China) Regional Committee of the International Water Association with the objective of enhancing the awareness and involvement of the community in protecting water quality.
