Report on Technical Visit to
Ngau Tam Mei Water Treatment Works
& Ngong Ping Sewage Treatment Works
for Undergraduates

Photo On 3 March 2007, IWAHK hosted a technical visit to Ngong Ping Sewage Treatment Works and Ngau Tam Mei Water Treatment Works for undergraduates of Hong Kong universities. More than 40 undergraduates from the University of Science & Technology, the Hong Kong Baptist University, the Chinese University of Hong Kong and the University of Hong Kong took part in the event. The delegation was guided to the Visitor Information Centre first when it arrived at Ngong Ping Sewage Treatment Works in the morning. The colleagues of Drainage Services Department then briefed the delegates on the sewage treatment principles adopted by the plant, the design principles and construction difficulties, the treatment plant layout as well as the recycled usage of the effluent. A short tour around the plant was conducted in two groups subsequent to the briefing. Completed the visit at Ngong Ping, the delegation headed to Ngau Tam Mei Water Treatment Works of Water Supplies Department for the next visit program. PhotoAn introduction of the International Water Association and its student membership was given to the participants by Ir T O LEE at the Conference Room of Ngau Tam Mei Water Treatment Works shortly after the light refreshment. At the end of the 10-min presentation, the participants were encouraged to submit their application for student membership through Internet if they intend to learn more about the water industry from global perspective. The visit for Ngau Tam Mei Water Treatment Works then started by a short video introducing its water treatment process, design principles of plant installation and supply area of the water produced. A tour around the ozone plant, sedimentation basins, 2-stage biological filters and control room was followed subsequently. The delegation finally dismissed at Tsuen Wan MTR Station at around 3pm. Generally speaking, the undergraduates appreciated the visit in which they had gained an understanding of the work of the two government departments in the provision of water supply and drainage services.
